Elegant, trumpet-like lilies, she thought. But there was something off. Something not right. It was the color. It was strange, sort of pale and flesh-colored. In a sleepy seaside town outside Copenhagen, a strange light at the bottom of the harbor has the police call in a military diver with a speciality in wet crime scenes. Deep down in the dark water sits a car with the dead body of a young woman in the driver's seat. She has a long cut in her lower abdomen. Copenhagen Police's Felix Jørgensen is on the case, and his new deputy Kathrine Nymark gets thrown in the deep end on her very first day on the job, when it becomes clear that a brutal murderer is on the loose.
On some jagged cliffs off a rural district in the south of Norway, a dog walker finds a partly skeletal corpse wearing a wetsuit. At first, the police assume it's just another drowning incident, but the victim doesn't match any people reported missing and then there's also that suture thread in her abdomen. Black Notice is a crime story told in five parts. Partly based on actual events, Black Notice tells the thrilling story of the international hunt for a ruthless serial killer.
The investigation into the two unrelated deaths quickly becomes intertwined, as it becomes apparent that they are the work of the same killer. Felix Jørgensen and Kathrine Nymark, working in close cooperation with the Norwegian police, race against time to identify the killer and stop them before they can strike again.
As the investigation progresses, it becomes clear that the killer is highly intelligent, meticulous, and elusive. They leave behind few clues, and the team struggles to piece together the puzzle. The killer seems to be taunting them, leaving behind subtle hints and clues that only serve to further frustrate the investigators.
The trail leads the team across international borders, as they follow the killer's movements and try to anticipate their next move. They uncover a complex web of connections and motives, all while the body count continues to rise. The pressure mounts as the public and the media become increasingly invested in the case, demanding answers and justice.
Kathrine Nymark, in particular, finds herself pushed to the limit, both physically and emotionally, as she grapples with the weight of her first major case. Felix Jørgensen, with his years of experience, provides a steady hand and guidance, but even he is tested by the relentless nature of the killer.
As the investigation reaches a critical juncture, the team must make difficult decisions and take risks in order to finally bring the killer to justice. The climax of the story is a heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat conclusion that will leave readers breathless and eager for more.
Throughout the narrative, the author skillfully weaves in themes of identity, morality, and the nature of evil, challenging the reader to grapple with complex questions about the human condition. The characters are richly developed, and their personal struggles and growth add depth and emotional resonance to the overall story.
Overall, Black Notice is a gripping and suspenseful crime thriller that will keep readers captivated from start to finish. The international setting, the complex investigation, and the chilling antagonist make for a truly compelling and unforgettable reading experience.
